When Steamboat Willie debuted in 1928, cartoon audiences for the first time heard the sounds of speech, music, and special effects synchronized with the animation on the screen.
With a cantankerous growl, Captain Pegleg Pete kicked the whistling Steamboat Willie-a.k.a. Mickey Mouse-out of the wheelhouse. Fun soon took over as Mickey created a lively musical performance using a cat, a duck, a goat, and other animals as musical instruments. And the original Mickey voice? It was performed by Walt Disney himself.
