On a holiday outing years ago, several friends set off to enjoy dinner at a small co What they found was a quaint village decorated for the holidays with lights glowing am fallen snow.

Each piece is handcrafted of ceramic, individually hand painted fired with a glaze finish. Cast into the mold is the Department 56 logo-your guaranteed authenticity. Every year pieces are retired and the molds broken leaving room for new pieces capture the heart and spirit of small-town America.

Red Owl
For more than 66 years, the Red Owl family of grocery stores fed families across eight states in the Midwest. With stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota, Sout Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, the friendly red-faced, black-eyed mascot stood proud over more than 140 stores.

The Minneapolis-based chain began as a small-town grocer, with its first store opening in in 1922 in Rochester, Minnesota. It wasn't until 1950 that the company began opening stores in metropolitan markets, including its first in Minneapolis. Within ten years. Red Owl was the top grocer in the Twin Cities area and had the most successful stores in cities including Milwaukee. Denver and Chicago.

While Red Owl grew quickly and built modern, exciting stores, the company also knew that it was just as important to remember the age-old concept that there is no better way to win friends than to be friendly and courteous. With this in mind, the store became known for its outstanding service and conscientious employees as well as the friendly red owl that guarded its stores. In 1988, during its 66th year as a retailer, Red Owl was acquired by another Minnesota based grocery retailer and distributor, SUPERVALU INC.
