Description
At the beginning of 1941, the war in North Africa became a rout for fascist Italy. On the ground and in the air, the Italians suffered reverse after reverse. Only German assistance and especially the strategic error of Churchill (to dispatch the victorious troops of General O'Connor to Greece when they were almost ready to seize Tripolitania) made it possible to reverse the situation. As of February the first elements of Afrika Korps arrived, led by a General who would become one of the most remarkable men of war in history: Erwin Rommel. The Luftwaffe was not left out, dispatching Fliegerführer Afrika to support the brilliant operations of Rommel. On 19-Apr-41, the only fighter unit was sent to the desert, I/JG 27, carried out its first mission in tropicalized Bf 109E-7s. From February 1941, the AfrikaKorps was active in Libya to support the Italians, who were in full rout after the disaster of Beda Fomm. Flieger Führer Afrika was created at the same time, but the detachment of fighters necessary, (in the event the I./JG 27) to escort the bombers in operations, carried out their missions only from April 19, 1941. By late 1941 several Bomber stab had joined the ranks including the Stuka's of II./StG. Seen here in traditional desert colouring, with black codes on the fuselage and the white theatre band running around it.
