Hazleton General Hospital Paramedic
The Hazleton Area saw its first Paramedic Unit, Medic 4, enter service on July 1, 1982. During the first year the Paramedics responded to approximately 700 calls. Since its inception another vehicle, Medic 304, has been placed in service and the call volume has grown to more than 3000 calls per year.
Medic 4's principle coverage area is approximately 200 square miles. The area is primarily rural and includes parts of Luzerne, Schuylkill and Carbon Counties in Pennsylvania. The Unit is headquartered at the Department of Emergency Services of Hazleton General Hospital in Hazleton, Pa.
The Paramedic Unit is staffed by highly trained Pre-Hospital RN's, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. The Staff maintains numerous certifications. The following are a few. CFR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation:

BTLS-Basic Trauma Life Support
PHTLS-Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
CEN Certified Emergency Nurse
The majority of the calls that Medic 4 responds to are medical emergencies. When patients with multiple trauma are encountered they are usually flown to one of the regional trauma centers. Medic 4 utilizes one of the following flight services:

Life Lion - Hershey Medical Center
Life Flight - Penn St. Geisinger Med. Center
Guthrie One - Robert Packer Hospital
Hazleton General Hospital and Medic 4 are clinical sites for the paramedic students from Luzerne Community College Paramedic Program.
