Ekaterina (Katia) Gordeeva was born in 1971 in Moscow. She began skating at the age of four and trained at Moscow's Central Army Club, a world-famous facility for world-class athletes. When she was eleven, coaches there paired her with Sergei Grinkov, then fifteen. The coaches who made the match must have had a glimpse of their remarkable potential as a pair. Two years later, Gordeeva and Grinkov won the Junior World Championship. More than a dozen awards followed in the next decade, including two Olympic gold medals for pairs figure skating in 1988 and 1994. Katia and Sergei were celebrated around the world for elevating the art of pairs skating to new heights of grace, beauty, and artistry. Audiences everywhere were enchanted.

Six years after they began skating as a pair, the duo fell in love. They were married in 1991, when Katia was nineteen. Their daughter, Daria, was born in 1992. Today, Katia is applying her talents to the tasks of raising her daughter and building a career as a dazzling solo skater. She also serves as the official spokesperson for Target's efforts on behalf of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
