Description
Morocco, during World War II, was a seething hot-bed of intrigue, harboring European refugees fleeing from Nazi aggression. French resistance fighters hiding out while they plotted the overthrow of the German occupation of Paris and German secret agents seeking to destroy the French resistance movement. Rick, an American expatriate is the owner of the Cafe Americain. He intends to stay aloof from all this dangerous activity, proclaiming early in the film "I stick my neck out for nobody."
However, his life is radically altered by the arrival of Ilsa, his beautiful ex-lover and her husband, Victor Lazlo, a French resistance fighter on the lam from German agents. Rick and Ilsa briefly but poignantly relive their old passion, as the theme song "As Time Goes By" is softly played in the background. but Ilsa and Victory's plight serve to re-kindle Rick's idealism and he risks his life to aid in their escape. In the end, Rick lets Ilsa go with a final toast, delivering one of the most memorable lines in cinematic history: "Here's looking at you, kid."
