Description
The Shoemaker
THE SHOEMAKER DEPICTS one of the many trades at Colonial Williamsburg that use tools and techniques of the 18th century. Sitting with a cutting board in his lap, the shoemaker employs hammers, round knives and templates. On a good day, he might turn out two pairs of shoes. Because a single pattern was made for both of a customer's feet, shoes could be worn on either the right or left foot. To ensure even wear, most people alternated which shoe they wore on which foot.
