Description
Movie fans of all ages have been, and will continue to be, enthralled by the delightful movie classic, The Wizard of OZ. One of the most memorable characters from this timeless epic is the enchanting Glinda.
The American actress who portrayed Glinda was Billie Burke. Only 19 when she got her first big break, Burke made several Broadway appearances and in 1914 married Florenz Ziegfeld. With her attention turned toward her marriage, Burke made few serious stage or film appearances. After Ziegfeld's death, however, she was lured back into acting to support herself and appeared in several successful films.
At the time of casting for The Wizard of Oz. Burke was under contact with MGM's 'Characters and Comediennes,' a group consisting of eight on-staff actresses, any of which who might have been suitable for the role of Glinda. MGM's decision was unanimous. Billie Burke's seasoned acting talents would be brought to the silver screen as Glinda
Glinda's appearances are some of the most memorable scenes in this movie. Dorothy was greeted in Oz by Glinda, who arrived in her magical, luminous bubble, creating a stir among the Munchkins and leaving Dorothy herself in awe. Glinda introduces herself as the Good Witch of the North and asks Dorothy 'Are you a good witch or a bad witch?' Dorothy explains to Glinda that '...she is not a witch at all.' She is just a little girl that wants to go home. Glinda points Dorothy in the direction of the Emerald City, telling her to 'follow the Yellow Brick Road.'
After her journey throughout the land of Oz to reach the Emerald City, Dorothy was not able to receive help from the Wizard to take her back to Kansas. Suddenly Glinda appears and gives Dorothy the legendary advice she needs to take her home. 'You've always had the power to get back to Kansas. Tap your heels together three times. And think to yourself, there's no place like home, there's no place like home.'
Her roles were many, but Billie Burke's own favorite part was that of Glinda. A fitting choice, for her unique style is forever immortalized in our hearts and minds as The Good Witch of the North.
