Conceived and built by a multinational, multispecies consortium, Babylon 5 is the fifth (and only survivor) in a series of projects that share the same design philosophy: to use physical location and size to create an environment in which humans and aliens could work out their differences. Born out of the fire of the Earth-Minbari War, the first three Babylon stations were destroyed by acts of sabotage and the fourth mysteriously disappeared the day after it came on line.

Viewed as "Neutral Ground", Babylon 5 is a totally self-sufficient frontier city serving as a galactic marketplace and political forum to the quarter of a million beings that call it home. The five mile long station is broken up into color coded sectors to assist in-station travel. The core shuttle runs along the entire length of the station and is public transport for Babylon 5 citizens. Further comforts include a Casino and the Garden, a large botanical area that runs along the inside surface of the station's carousel, which features farmland, limited woodlands, a hedge maze, zen garden, artificial lakes and so on.
