Description
Every decade since the 1930's has had a car which personified an entire generation. As the '32 Ford, '49 Mercury, and '57 Chevy identified their eras, the GTO defined the high-performance decade of the 1960's.
When the GTO burst upon the automotive world in 1964, few could have foreseen the lasting impact the car would have. The combination of a light intermediate-sized car and a big V-8 engine clearly stated Pontiac's appeal to the performance-oriented youth market. The GTO had started the muscle car revolution. By 1969, the GTO had grown and been refined into a superb all-around performer, with graceful yet muscular looks to match. The sleek front end blended into the classic coke-bottle-shaped body of the long-hood, short-deck design. Providing the power was the standard 400 cubic inch V-8. Fed by a Rochester Quadra-Jet carburetor and with a 10.75-to-1 compression ratio, this engine produced a full 350 horsepower.
The GTO came to be the standard by which other muscle cars were judged. Some were quicker, some faster. Some handled better and some had better braking but few blended all these attributes as fully as the GTO.
