Description

The Sd.Kfz Panzer I originally designed as a training tank for the German army was used in many theaters in WWII and the Spanish Civil War. Design for Panzer I began in 1932 and went into mass production in 1934. On Hitler's birthday there was a demonstration of the Panzer Is. Hitler was amazed by the show and ordered them into mass production. The Panzer I was armed with twin MG-34 machine guns as the main armament and had extremely thin armour. The Panzer I saw service in the Spanish Civil War and the begining years of WWII. It was not very effective due to its thin armour and light armament, although was used with success as a training tank. There were other variants of the Panzer I, these variants included, a tank destroyer and a command tank. The Tank destroyer was called the PanzerJeager I and was armed with a more potent 40mm anti-tank gun but had no turret. The second variant was called the Kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen ("small armoured command vehicle") 200 of these were manufactured. Production of the Panzer I ceased in 1937.
