The Mad Genius Behind Monster High Dolls
Since 2010, Monster Highhas had us screaming––out of excitement! The brand put a twist on the “normal” fashion dolls people usually think of––the prim and proper Barbies and ultra-chic Bratz dolls now had some competition! And not just any kind of competition––Monster High is perhaps the most unique doll line to date!
What’s the Monster High Story?
Monster High is an exciting fictional story about fashionable monster girls and boys (or “ghouls” and “mansters”) who go to high school and embark on adventures together. There are tons of references to pop culture and even folklore and mythology!
The original ghouls of monster high include Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf, Lagoona Blue, and Cleo De Nile. Respectively, they’re daughters of Frankenstein, Dracula, a werewolf, a sea monster, and a Pharoah mummy!
The main premise of the story is to be yourself and celebrate diversity. What makes you different is what makes you beautiful! As the main slogan says, “(Where) Freaky Just Got Fabulous!”
What did critics and consumers think of Monster High? What were Monster High’s beginnings like?
The idea of Monster High started out as…a trip to the mall! Monster High creators noticed their daughters and nieces seemed to be more interested in the goth aesthetic and tried on tons of alternative-styled clothes that day, having a ball.
Mattel started brainstorming logos and other franchise ideas that same year, and the rest is history!
The Monster High fashion dolls started coming out shortly thereafter! The original line of ghouls was released first, and Mattel thrived in this experimentation phase––making other Monster High Media such as a popular web show, movies, merchandise, and more. In fact, Monster High became so popular that a specialty collector’s line (called “Skullector dolls”) flew into the scene––Monster High dolls with rooted eyelashes and other luxury features geared towards an older audience.
But what did critics and consumers think of this fabulous and freaky idea? Reviews were scoring high, but some parents thought the dolls were a bit too…scary. This led to a few brand makeovers and made Monster High what it is more than a decade later!
How has Monster High changed over the years?
The original 2010 dolls are, of course, the rarest of the bunch, and some fans consider the original dolls the best. However, there’s something unique about every Frankie Stein, Draculaura, and the other ghouls. From 2010-2013, the dolls were high glam with a smoldering spooky look. In 2016, the dolls were toned down a bit, becoming less glam and more fresh and cutesy––the monster girl next door, if you will! All versions of the dolls are loved in one way or another, making the Monster High fanbase and brand stronger than ever. No matter how much the dolls may change over the years, the message is always the same––celebrate your uniqueness!
