Description
Hurst...Say the word to any automotive enthusiast and you'll hear about lightning fast shifters, and rare high performance cars such as the Hemi Under Glass or the Hurst/Olds.
Born in New York City in 1927, George Hurst began his automotive career in 1954 after serving as a machinist and aircraft mechanic in the Navy. His business, located in Philadelphia, specialized in custom modifications and antique auto restoration. Engine conversions soon became a specialty, and a complete line of motor mount adaptors became his first manufactured products. During 1958 Hurst developed two products. A 3-speed floor shifter and a Volkswagen Microbus accessory bumper guard. The VW accessory proved to be so popular, Volkswagen made a similar item standard equipment. This left Hurst with his engine adaptors and shifter. To promote his products, Hurst went on a cross-country sales trip in late December of that year. Stopping at dozens of speed shops from Philly to California, he succeeded in writing thousands of dollars of orders. George Hurst had an inventive mind which ultimately resulted in many products for hi-performance cars. His "Jaws of Life" rescue tool, patented in 1965, has been instrumental in saving the lives of countless accident victims. At the time of his death in 1986, he was busy developing a variable ratio transmission with only nine moving parts.
