Description

On December 15, 1927 Texaco acquired its first airplane, the Texaco #1, a Ford tri-Motored Monoplane, registration #3443. Purchased from Ford Aeroplane Company of Dearborn, Michigan, the plane was piloted by Captain Frank M. Hawks. Hawks was a veteran pilot and Superintendent of Texaco's Aviation Division. He toured the country in the plane where crowds of visitors would come to view the plane.

The Model 4 Tri-Motored Ford was an all metal construction plane with a 74 foot wing span. The center engine was a Pratt and Whitney 400 horse power, while the two wing engines were Wright Whirlwind 200 h.p. engines. Holding ten passengers and weighing three tons it had a cruising range of 900 miles and was capable of reaching an altitude of 15,000 feet.
