The transporter provides the primary means of extravehicular personnel and cargo transport to and from the Starship Enterprise. By energizing and dematerializing subjects at the quantum level (non-living objects transport at the molecular level), the Transporter converts entities into a subatomic matter stream which can be relocated both within and beyond the ship. In this way, U.S.S. Enterprise personnel and their guests can 'beam' instantaneously to the moments of extreme emergency. Normal operating range is approximately 40,000 kilometers, depending on payload mass and relative velocity (transport at warp speed is possible only if the destination and transport sites are both traveling at the same relative speed). The Transporter is equipped with a biofilter which scans incoming matter streams for signs of materials hazardous to life on the U.S.S. Enterprise. The longest known transport was achieved by retired Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott ('Scotty'), who escaped an exploding ship by programming himself into the transport buffer and emerging 75 years later.
