Olivia Newton-John and her Influence on the Barbie World

Olivia Newton-John and her Influence on the Barbie World

Olivia Newton-John was an acclaimed singer with multiple number one hits and four Grammy awards under her belt. Newton-John’s musical career is impressive; she was said to be one of the best-selling music artists from the second half of the 20th century to the present. However, Newton-John’s most iconic and remembered achievement is without a doubt the pop culture gem Grease, a movie that has influenced multiple generations.

Why is Grease so popular?

Grease is a movie described as a musical romantic comedy. It was released in the summer of 1978 and quickly became a success. People couldn’t get enough of it. The soundtrack, the dancing, the fabulous 50s aesthetic, and the love story between Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny (John Travolta) were all key elements for the movie to set its feet in pop culture.

Why was Olivia Newton-John’s character special?

Newton-John’s character Sandy is still known to date. Why? Well, there are multiple factors. Sandy is known as a sweetheart. She’s a beautiful, kind girl who is liked by everyone. We know people love the girl next door, but there’s something else that people love... a good transformation, and this is exactly what Sandy had in Grease. She went from having a classic feminine, pretty in pink aesthetic to a wild and rebellious "greaser girl" style with dark clothes and teased hair, and the best of it all? People loved both! This is quite rare considering that when a movie has a transformation scene, people usually prefer one and tend to be critical of the other, but Sandy rocked both. This is why, until this day, Sandy has maintained popularity and has influenced multiple other franchises, such as Barbie.

What does Olivia Newton-John have to do with Barbie?

Well, the Greaser Fever was so widespread, it managed to catch Mattel, and in 2003 and 2004, two beautiful Barbie dolls based on Newton-John’s grease character were born.

The first Sandy Olsson Barbie was introduced in 2003 as part of the 25th-anniversary celebration of Grease’s release. This Barbie portrays Sandy in greaser attire, with a leather jacket, black clothes, and teased curly hair. No doubt, Sandy would have been accepted as part of the Pink Ladies in a blink if she had worn this outfit to begin with!

The second Sandy Olsson Barbie, released in 2004, shows her wearing her beautiful "Tell me more" romantic outfit. This doll has a delicate hairstyle that perfectly matches Sandy’s good girl side.

Both releases were a hit, so much that for the 30th Grease anniversary, another Sandy Barbie was shown to the world, the Grease Girl Sandy Cheerleader Barbie Doll 30th Anniversary Pink Label. As the name says, this doll portrays Sandy in her Rydell High cheerleading uniform. This doll wears a ponytail and has red and white pom poms.

People loved Sandy’s duality, and Mattel knew about it. In recent years, the doll’s popularity has only increased with people wanting to acquire the Grease dolls.
