How Bratz Dolls Have Maintained Their Popularity

How Bratz Dolls Have Maintained Their Popularity

The early 2000s are back, and so are Bratz!

In 2001, the world saw the birth of four new fashion dolls that were nothing like you had seen before. They had big eyes, large heads, small bodies, and the classic early 2000’s makeup, including icy eyeshadow and lips full of gloss. The dolls had distinctive clothes that set them apart from other dolls, giving them a sassy look. Kids were in love, and parents were shocked. These dolls were none other than Bratz.

Who are The Bratz?

Bratz Dolls, known simply as Bratz are a brand founded by MGA Entertainment. Bratz were created by Carter Bryant, a former Mattel employee who specialized in designing clothes for Barbies. In 2001, after Bryant successfully sold his idea to MGA Entertainment, the first Bratz, or the OG Bratz as some people call them, were born: Yasmin, Jade, Cloe, and Sasha.

Why did Bratz Dolls become so popular?

Bratz are diverse; their fashion is unique, their features are notorious, and they’re unapologetically cool. This made them an instant hit, not only with children but also with teens and young people, who saw the dolls as the rebellious cousins to other dolls in the market. Bratz dolls were everywhere in the early 2000s. That’s why it is no surprise that by 2006, Bratz had about 40 percent of the fashion-doll market.

Are there only four Bratz Dolls?

The most popular Bratz are by far the OG 4: Yasmin, Jade, Cloe, and Sasha. However, there’s more to the brand than just these four fashion icons. Bratz’s success was so great that the franchise expanded to multiple Bratz spin-offs such as Bratz Boyz, Bratz Babyz, Bratz Kidz, Bratz Petz and Bratzillas (Bratz with a witchy twist). We saw many more dolls besides the core four. Among the most popular are Meygan, Dana, and Fianna.

The Bratz franchise moved towards other areas; the dolls even had their own web series, TV series, and a live-action film. Bratz even tried to take over the music industry when their virtual band released six soundtrack albums.

Why were Bratz Dolls controversial?

Bratz dolls were shaped differently than other dolls; they had oversized heads, bigger eyes, and prominent lips. Many people, including other doll lovers, couldn’t understand the appeal as they deemed the dolls "strange-looking" and "unrealistic".

The Bratz playsets included multiple accessories and portrayed different places and scenarios, such as discos, malls, karaoke, salons, and even Las Vegas and Tokyo. Many thought these dolls represented a lavish style and thought this could be a bad influence on the kids and teens playing with the dolls. The dolls were even accused of being overly sexualized.

The Bratz franchise was involved in multiple legal troubles with Mattel. The two, Mattel and MGA entertainment, have been to court several times, which has only added fuel to the popularity contest between Bratz vs. Barbie vs. My Scene (also owned by Mattel).

Are Bratz Dolls still popular?

Although Bratz lost popularity during the mid-2010s, the dolls are back on the scene! How? Well, nostalgia has been a big part of it. Whether some like it or not, early 2000s fashion has been resurrected, and since Bratz dolls encapsulate the early 2000s vibe perfectly, they have come back to make the fashion world Y2K again. Nowadays, the dolls have gathered an even bigger fan base due to their unique aesthetic, and they're no longer regarded as a "bad influence" but rather icons of pop culture.

Whether you’re a millennial or Gen Z, there’s something we can all agree with: Bratz dolls are the original baddies.
