The United States military constantly trains for every kind of combat scenario. One of the threats for which soldiers prepare is the presence of advanced chemical and biological weapons in battle. The military has developed the Mission Oriented Protective Posture (M.O.P.P.) system and specialized gear to protect soldiers if these weapons are ever detected. Five M.O.P.P. levels exist, and as the threat of chemical agents increases, more Chemical Protective Equipment (CPE) is donned to provide a greater level of protection. At Level 0, no equipment is worn, but is readily available if an alarm should sound. At Level 1, soldiers wear a battledress overgarment (BDO) and butyl-coated nylon helmet cover. The overgarment has an outer cotton layer and an inner layer of charcoal-impregnated polyurethane foam, to trap chemical agents while allowing air to pass in and out, to reduce heat buildup. When Level 2 is reached, soldiers cover their combat footwear with impermeable vinyl over-boots. At Level 3, they wear a protective mask and hood. At Level 4, they add gloves made of impermeable butyl rubber. By familiarizing themselves with M.O.P.P. gear and procedures, the men and women of the armed services ensure that they are ready to meet any battlefield challenge.
