Despite his great success in show business, Hope's commitment to entertaining US troops overseas is considered by many to be his most important work. Hope's career as the laugh mascot of US troops began in 1941 when he took his radio show to entertain the servicemen stationed at the Army Air Force Base, March Field, California. By 1943, Hope and his small USO performing troupe were venturing into combat areas to perform for embattled US and allied audiences in England, Africa, Sicily, and Iceland. From WWII through the Persian Gulf War, Hope flew, drove, walked, and sailed millions of miles to visit US military facilities around the world. He often endured hazardous conditions and risked his own personal safety to be with America's men and women at arms. Even during times of peace, Hope continued to entertain GI audiences at military bases and veteran's hospitals with his annual Christmas show.
