Created in 1977 in direct response to numerous terrorist incidents that occurred in the 1970s, the U.S. Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment- Delta (SFOD-D) trains constantly to be the world's best counter-terrorist force. Prepared to operate anywhere in the world in a moments notice, SFOD-D specializes in hostage rescue, barricade operations and specialized reconnaissance. Their composition and strengths are closely guarded secrets- in fact, the US government still refuses to acknowledge its existence.

SFOD-D is comprised of more than 300 elite commandos drawn from the Army, Navy and Air Force-especially the 82nd Airborne, Army Rangers, and Special Force Green Berets. Though their main function is as a hostage rescue unit, they are trained in all aspects of counter-terrorism and said to be the world's best specialists in CQB (Close Quarters Battle). Delta troopers are equipped with the most advanced weaponry and equipment available in the U.S. special operations arsenal. A significant portion of their gear is highly customized and cannot be found anywhere but in Delta's lockers.

Members of this super elite group must train for any eventuality. As such, new recruits must undergo extreme mental and physical adversity before being accepted into its ranks. To even be considered, each soldier must pass a background security investigation. They receive very thorough physical examinations as well as a battery of tests to determine psychological soundness. The candidate then begins several grueling events that may include a 100-meter swim fully clothed and wearing boots, and an 18 mile speed march with full gear. The few candidates that successfully pass this milestone are then required to take part in a 40 mile solo land navigational course in unfamiliar territory. This event is almost inhuman: each candidate is required to find and reach the finish within an exceptionally short time-period, doing it with the "fastest and the mostest". Throughout the course each soldier is completely alone; they are supplied neither encouragement nor a goal. This exercise is specifically designed to put the maximum psychological pressure on those being tested, to prove that they can hack whatever it takes to be part of that group called DELTA.
