Description

The George Washington Third Edition Caroler is dressed in traditional 18th century winter attire. During Christmas time at Mount Vernon, George Washington and his gentlemen contemporaries could often be seen participating in outdoor winter sports, such a as horseback riding and fox hunting. The General is holding a whip, echoing Thomas Jefferson's statement that Washington was "the best horseman of his age, and the most graceful figure that could be seen on horseback." Washington owned stables of horses; two of his favorites were Nelson, a sorrel, and Blueskin, named for his bluish gray color.

George and Martha Washington cherished the holiday season, and when spent at home at Mount Vernon, it was both a time of worship and reunion of family and friends. Lady Washington insisted on traveling to spend Christmas with the General wherever he was stationed during the Revolutionary War. Although she was not with him on Christmas Day in the harsh winter of 1777 at Valley Forge, she did join him soon after to aid in the care of the endangered troops. Her presence was of great comfort to the troops, and she became a beloved figure in camp. She brought food and supplies, cared for the sick, mended clothing, knitted socks, prepared meals, and led a women's relief squad
