Description

Parading support of their new nation, Williamsburg residents prepare for Independence Day-that glorious celebration of what a group of determined American rebels achieved. In the early years following the Declaration, festivities included many trademarks of today's holiday: fireworks, picnics, and time with family and friends.

CALL TO BATTLE

IN THE 18TH CENTURY, young men serving the military as fifers and drummers were invaluable because they "sounded" the commander's orders with music that could be heard over the din of battle. Dressed in colors that contrasted with those of soldiers, they were stationed behind the lines of battle for protection. The Grand Union flag was the first American flag flown in Williamsburg on May 15, 1776. These figurines represent the patriotic spirit that won America its freedom.

PATRIOTIC FAMILY

FAMILIES VISITING Williamsburg today celebrate American patriotism by experiencing life in 18th century Virginia. Throughout Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area, guests witness and participate in revolutionary discussions, troop musters, and fife and drum marches and celebrate a range of events leading to American independence.

TO MARKET WE GO

A DAY OF SHOPPING in the 18th century included stops at the market square to purchase fresh foods like vegetables, fruits, breads and meats and at the grocer's to buy imported foods such as rum, spices and sugar cones. Other merchants offered a variety of household goods, much like the general stores of the 19th century. Today, Colonial Williamsburg's stores still sell many of the kinds of goods that were available more than 200 years ago.
