Description
Mickey Thompson was known in every area of motorsports. If there ever was a renaissance man in the performance Industry, it was "Sir Mickey". Like many others, he began racing on the dry lakes of Southern California in the years prior to WWII. In the fifties he was hired to manage Lions drag strip in Long Beach. He was the first to understand the physics involved in dragsters and built the first slingshot rail with a narrowed rear end. His Challenger streamliner, powered by four Pontiac engines, set a Land Speed Record at Bonneville which was not broken for 31 years. Dragsters, funny cars, Indy cars, and finally off road racing kept his inventive mind occupied until his untimely death in 1988.
As if racing wasn't enough to keep him busy, Mickey began manufacturing engine components in 1959. Forged aluminum pistons and connecting rods lead Mickey into custom wheels and dozens of additional products. His need for low profile tires for the revolutionary rear-engined Indy car he designed evolved into a complete line of competition and street tires.
Racer, Inventor, businessman, promoter, entrepreneur, husband and father, Mickey Thompson did it all... and very well indeed.
